The 15feet Moolavar is a beautifully carved image of Lord Anantha Padmanabhan in a Sthala Sayana Posture lying on the serpent Adisesha and is similar to the one seen in Thiruvananthapuram Divya Desam. The pillared hall contains large panels cut in the side walls filled with scriptures including those of Narasimha and Varaha. MalaiyadipattiLocated 45kms from Tiruchirapalli in a remote village in the Kulattur Taluk of Pudukottai District is the largely unknown North Facing Rock Cut Anantha Padmanabhaswamy cave temple in Malayadipatti, one that dates back around 1200 years to the late 8th Century AD / early 9th Century AD. Malayadipatti was also referred to as Thiru Valattur Malai and was known for two rock cut temples – one dedicated to Shiva and the other to Vishnu- both hewn out of the same rock. While the rock cut style is more reminiscent of the temple at Thirumayam ( also in Pudukottai District) and the stucco decorations there, the Perumal temple at Malayadipatti is more of the Mamalla style with elegant pillars. The temple is considered one of the oldest stone temples in South India. Shiva is worshipped as Parvathagiriswarar.Its Main artistic gifts are a hundred and one pillared Ratha mandapam and two splendid portrait sculptures of Dwarapalakas. ![]() Kunnandarkoil Cave Temple in Kunnandar koil , a village near Keeranur on Trichy-Pudukottai highway, is dedicated to Lord Siva. An interesting inscription in this temple dedicated to Sikharagiriswarar, is one relating to Mahendra Varma Pallavan who is known to have made a treatise on music here There is siva temple on a hilllock dedicated to Sikkanatheeswarer and life size sculpture were surrounded by this temple. The cave temples situated here are the testimony for the ancient art and culture. Kudimiyanmalai Temple, again near Pudukkottai, Tamil Nadu. According to experts, this was the place where the great Jain monks and siddhars resided. Though the paintings have lost their original sheen, much of it is visible. The central theme relates to the special audience hall with the lotus pond, Jain monks, apsaras, bulls, elephants, swans and other floral patterns. The paintings, done from natural dyes, portray the Dharma Chakra or the ‘wheel of law’, pertaining to Jainism. These paintings are considered to be the next of Ajantha cave Paintings. One of the most significant tourist place for historical paintings. Predominately a centre of Jainism, the monument is a rock-cut monastry of temple created by Jains. Sittanavasal Cave(also, Arivar Koil) located 12 Kmsfrom Pudukottai, is a 2nd-century Jain complex of caves in Sittanavasal village. Its name is a distorted form of Sit-tan-na-va-yil, a Tamil word which means “the abode of great saints”. They are, most alluring sites where history breathes, legends come alive and the landscape is most panoramic and inviting. Many may not be aware that Pudukottai has many ancient rock cut temples. ![]() I am overawed by the splendour of Pudukottai temples. Though, I am a native of Pudukottai, I never had an opportunity to explore its myth while in service and retirement gave me an opportunity to go around Pudukottai district in many spells of tours spanning two years and concluded my tour with visit to Malayadippati only yesterday( October 28, 2019). Little is known about Pudukottai and its beautiful temples some of which are Cave temples and monuments of outstanding architectural beauty.
